Samsonite Oyster 450: A Landmark in Hard-Shell Luggage

For more than a century, Samsonite has been shaping how people move through the world, continually rethinking luggage to match changing travel habits. In that evolution, the Samsonite Oyster 450, part of the broader Oyster II range, marked an important shift in hard-sided case design.

Conceived at FM Design in London, the Oyster II range introduced a then-radical idea: recessed handles and locks integrated within the protective shells, reducing snag points and creating a cleaner, more resilient profile. Lightweight, gas-injection–moulded polymer handles further reduced overall mass, helping the Oyster series become one of the lightest hard-sided offerings in the industry at the time.

Recognized with an iF Design Award, the Oyster II family—of which the Oyster 450 is a key example—continues to appear in airports and transit hubs around the world, a reminder that thoughtful industrial design can quietly redefine an everyday object for decades.
